Thing 13

1. How has your thinking been transformed about the integration of iPads into the curriculum? What surprised you about this process?

I liked using the iPads and it was very user friendly, for the most part. It's just me getting more comfortable in using the different tools before introducing it to the kids.  It's very easy to integrate a production tool into any content area.  It's quick and easy.  The thing that surprised me the most was how easy most of the tools are like garage band or iMovie.

2. What are your favorite tools, features, and/or apps which you learned about during this professional development?

I really enjoyed using iMovie, Keynote, Padlet the most. I will be using them more in the next school year.  I like that the kids can take photo's and then crop it and use them as real world examples in their projects.

3. What was your biggest “aha” moment during this training?

My biggest "aha" was how easy it is to integrate it into content.  You can use it for anything!  Even kids can take notes when researching.  the iPad is going to come in handy alot with the kids.  I cannot wait to use it more next school year.

Thing 11

Second Grade

TEKS:

Science-
2.9A identify the basic needs of plants and animals
2.9C- compare and give examples of the ways living organisms depend on each other and on their environments such as food chains within a garden, beach, park, lake, and wooded area
2.10A- observe, record, and compare how the physical characteristics of animals help them meet their basic needs such as fins help fish move and balance in the water

LA-
2.3B- ask relevant questions, seek clarification, and locate facts and details about stories and other texts and support answers with evidence from text
2.14B- locate facts that are clearly stated in a text
2.14D- use text features to locate specific information in text

Research-
2.24A-B- Research Plan
2.25A-C- Researching/Gathering Sources
2.26A-Researching/Synthesizing Information
2.27A- Research/Organizing and Presenting Ideas

Materials/Resources: iPads, Encyclopedia, Non-fiction texts, research binder

LO: I can research about aa living thing using appropriate online and book resources.  I can take notes on what i learn about my living thing: habitat, life cycle, physical characteristics, adapations, etc... I can write important facts about my living thing. I can publish my project using educreations.

The following must be included in your final project. (Students receive a copy of this in their research binder.)

Slide 1: Title of Presentation & Your Name

Slide 2: Description of your animal

1.     Create a circle map of your animal and write 8 words that describe it

Slide 3: Habitat

1.Map of where it lives

2. Describe the weather, temperature of the habitat

Slide 4: Physical Adaptations

1.     Draw and label physical adaptations and explain how it helps them survive

Slide 5: Food Chain- Predator

1.Include photos of what your living thing eats.

Slide 6: Interesting Facts

1.     Discuss at least 5 interesting facts about your living thing.

Slide 8: Bibliography page
1. Cite your sources that you used during your research.

Note for teacher:

Students will work at their own pace.  I will monitor and conduct writing conferences with each student to ensure they are on track.  They are to complete each slide in their research binder before publishing it with Educreations because once you start it, it will not let you go back and edit or revise.  So all, work must be completed and checked by the teacher before publishing their work.

Once completed, the students will save their project on the Educreations carousel for later review. Students will share their project with a class of their choice.  I will later review their project, but no gradeis assigned with the pullout program.  Students will also showcase their project during the GT research showcase.

Thing 10

Part 1:

I liked the Copyright with Cyberbee and it was very kid friendly. I would use this withe my pullout kids to show them the importance of citing their sources and giving credit to who it belongs to.  The fair use policy was interesting and very enlightening.  It will help me in guiding myself as well as guiding the kids to waht can be fairly used.  The four factors were good to know as well.  I will have to make a sign asking those four questions to help remind myself and the kids. The Creative Common was cool to know about. I didn't realize there was something like that out there.  It would be a great resourece to go to for sharing and using creative work through their organization.  After viewing the Fair(y) Use Film, it was interesting how they used it.  It was engaging way to show the kids what copyright means in using clips from disney movies.  This would be good to share with the kids.

Part 2:
1. After watching the video from Common Sense Educators, what stuck out in your mind about how the teacher introduced copyright and fair use to her students?

She did great job preparing kids with exposure to the vocabulary.  Also did a good job teaching them the purpose.  I like how in depth she went to when to use fair use and when to apply it.

2. Why do you think the lesson had such an impact on her students?

The kids took ownerhsip over it.  They understood why it was so important to use fair use.  She spend a long time discussing and teaching when to use it.  It was a fun way to introduce this leson and the kids were engaged in it.  She made it relevant to them by using people who were relevant to the kids like Beyonce.

3. The teacher in the video reinforced critical thinking skills throughout this lesson by having the students support their answers and evaluations with evidence. How does this strategy enhance the instruction taking place?

It enhances it because the kids got discussion time with small groups and whole groups.  She monitored their discussions and asked higher level thinking as she walked around.  She wrote down kids ideas and thoughts.  She dove in deeper to ensure understanding and spent time making sure the kids were engaged and understood.  She connected herself with the kids and went to their level and related it to something important to their own lives.

4. How could you implement a similar lesson with your students? Think about who you would need to help you complete this lesson (campus Library Information Specialist, content specialists, etc.) and include this information in your response.

I would modify the lesson for the pullout elementary kids so they could grasp it better.  I would see if the Library Information Specialist could also do this in her class at the beginning of the year so all kids got exposed and mastered this understanding.  But also, it would need to be reinforced and revisited by classroom teachers and content specialists as well so kids saw the consistentcy.

Thing 9

Skype:

It would be cool to use Skype if we were learning about a specific topic and wanted to talk to a real geologist or oceanographer but they couldn't come to our school.  We could Skype with them and the kids would still get the feel of a real professional guest speaker.  Or, Skype could be used to communicate with pen pals that we have in another school in another state.  Or, Skype could be used if a student if out sick for a long period of time and your class just wants to check in with that student and say hi or to see how they are feeling.  It could also be used as a tutorial tool with someone who can't be there face to face.

Padlet:

I like the idea of Padlet for the kids.  I could use it as a whole group mannerwhere i can create a board on a specific topic and the kids just post to the board.  They are able to communicate and collaborate together.  I could use it in small group settings where the kids are working on a project together and on Padlet they can post their ideas.  Or kids can create a board on a topic of their choice and other students post to it their ideas.  Then the kids can take that information and take their project one step further.  For example, if a student creates a wall of "Which country would you like to travel to?"  Then others post their ideas.  The student takes those ideas and creates a graph representing that information.  Or the student picks the most popular country to research about.  They create a new wall for people to post things on.

Both are great tools to use in the classroom with the kids.  It's highly engaging and motivating to use.  Kids would love learning and sharing their ideas because it's not done in an intimidating manner.

Thing 8

I used netTrekker with my Gt pullout kids last semester when they were conducting their research on the iPads and using Educreations.  netTrekker was easy to use and even my first graders were comfortable using it  I talked to my kids about not everything on the internet is true and even showed them just searching for a topic brings up interesting "facts" about their living thing they were researching.  Net Trekker is trustworthy source who has checked their findings so all the facts are accurate.  I wasn't aware of the option to save their searches and research findings, which would be very good to know and use next year.  NetTrekker would eb great to incorporate in the classroom because it's a resource the kids nor i have to worry about checking or double checking the validity of their information.  It would make the research process run more smoothly.

Thing 7

I have never heard of or even used Garage Band but that was so cool!  I can only imagine how much fun the kids would have in using this!  Even the music teachers would love this!

I like how you can use what you created to upload in the iMovie as well. The kids would be able to create their own soundtrack.  I like that you can record a voice as well.  That will come in handy with the kids practicing their communication skills.

Podcasting would be cool to try with the kids because it would help them in the writing research, communication skills.

I am thinking i could add the podcasts to my echalk page so kids could access it whenever they wanted to. That would be great use at home or at school.

Thing 6

Educreations:

Activity 1: I embeded a video called Using ePals.

<iframe width="480" height="300" src="https://www.educreations.com/lesson/embed/390847/" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe>

I picked this lesson because i always wanted to use ePals but it seemed too overwhelming to try it.  But, after watching her video, it actually didn't seem to bad and it may even be manageable with my GT pullout kids.  I would use this lesson to show them how to use ePals.

Activity 2: I used educreations last semester with my GT pullout kids as their final product in their research project.  This is one that i helped a kid make.
<iframe width="480" height="300" src="https://www.educreations.com/lesson/embed/21985580/?rep=app" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It was super easy and very kid friendly.  The only thing i found that i didn't like was you cannot save and go back to edit your work.  Once you save it, it's done.  It won't let you revise or edit it.  So, my kids had to do a few slides, save it and then the next day they had to create a new slide.  That's the only downside to educreations. But the parents, teachers and administrators who came to our showcase were very impressed with what the kids could do on it.

I plan on using it again in the fall semester with my pullout kids, but also to get some teachers comfortable in using it as well.

Thing 5

Using iMovie would be great as one of the kids final products instead of the typical powerpoint, poster, writing document, etc...  It's fun and engaging for the kids and I think the kids would be more motivated to do the learning if they were able to use this app.

Topic: Retelling, Sequence
LO: I can tell about what the story was about. I can tell the order of events of a story.

After reading a fictional book of their choice, students will write a retelling of the text.  They will include major events, events in sequential order, and the elements of a story.

Once approved by the teacher, the student will use iMovie to create a trailer for their book.  The student will imagine they are the movie director and will put together a trailer of their book as if it were coming to The Big Screen.

Once completed, students will share their iMovie with their classmates.

Students will also show their trailers to a class of their choice and get feedback.  Classmates will tell the student if this trailer gave them a idea of what the story was about and if they would watch the movie if it were to come out.

Thing 4

I took the picture and with iPhoto and edited it to my liking.   It took me awhile to figure out how to upload it to my Google Drive because it kept telling me it wasn't a file.  I just kept playing with it until it worked.  I can see how kids would get frustrated and you would have to do a a few modeling lessons with them until they could master it quickly.
I could use this with my pullout GT kids during their research portion of the school year when they take photos.  They could use Edmodo, but I have never used it before.  So it will take some of my time to play around with it.

Thing 3

Content: Science:
TEK: 2.8A measure, record and graph weather information, including temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, and cloud coverage, in order to identify patterns in the data.

I will use Keynote with my pullout GT kids in the beginning of the school year when weather is taught in science.  The students will create slides that will show their measurement, recording and use of graphs to tell about the weather in a location of their choice.  They will also describe the appropriate clothing, transportation and activities that relate to the weather that day.  This will be a great tool for them to be a meteorologist and present their findings using Keynote.

The kids will save their files as a ppt file where i will be able to grade and evaluate their learning.  They will also present their work to other GT pullout kids as well. I think having multiple ways to save their work will be good because different teachers prefer different ways.

Thing 2

I have used www.kidblog.com with my pullout GT kids.  I have never blogged before so using this with the kids was a little challenging.  But, the kids got the hang of it and they figured out things and showed me and the other students.  They liked being able to have discussions with each other and make comments about what the assignment was.  Many of them were excited because their older siblings were blogging in schools or home and they were happy they could do it too.  We had the conversation of only putting in text what was appropriate for school.

I would like to try kidblog again this coming school year again with the kids, but to start it out in the begnning of the year and continually use it.
